How long have you worked for Grainger International?
3 years
How long have you worked as a Replenishment Operations
Manager?
1 year
During your time in this field, what changes have you
seen?
I have seen a real increase in the access to data and
information for analysis purposes. These system and data
improvements have made it much easier to identify issues and reduce
the time it takes to resolve problems.
Is it very different from when you first started out?
Yes, initially all data was provided on a weekly basis, via
hardcopy, and was not real time. Data system improvements and
analysis tools are a huge change for the better.
How has your job changed as a result?
I believe expectations for better service and lower inventory
levels have increased. But, also an increased feeling of control in
our area has come about as well.
What is your opinion on the future of Supply Chain
Planning?
I believe that the global economy will continue to expand to
more countries that are looking to increase exports. This will
increase lead times and variablility in replenishment times.
What personal challenges do you face on a day to day basis in
your job?
Our department is set up as an internal supplier to our
distribution network. By having only one customer we have a lot of
demand variability.
How do you overcome these?
We try to work with our internal customers as best we can. But
improving our forecast is our number on goal.
What software packages do you use to assist you with your
job?
We installed Barloworld Optimiza in 2006. We have seen 15%
decrease in inventory investment with no reduction in service.
What is your hot tip to others who do a similar job to
you?
I cannot stress the benefit of real time access to data and the
ability to get the information into a data analysis tool.
